Fire Sprinkler Backflow Preventer
A Reduced Pressure Zone (RPZ) valve protects the municipal water supply by preventing contaminated building water from flowing backward into public lines. RPZ valves are used for high-hazard applications and are typically installed at the fire service entrance in mechanical or utility areas.
Three major types of backflow preventers
- Reduced Pressure Zone (RPZ) – For high-hazard applications
- Double Check Valves (DCV) – For low-hazard applications
- Vacuum Breakers (PVB/AVB) – For back-siphonage protection
Key components
- Two large red OS&Y gate valves (handwheel isolation valves)
- Central RPZ valve body with pressure differential relief
- Four test ports for annual certification testing
- Bypass line with meter to detect leaks or unauthorized use of the fire line
Annual certification required
RPZ valves must be inspected and certified yearly by a qualified backflow tester. If you received a photo like this from your plumber, the assembly may need testing, repair, or replacement to pass inspection.
